4 years of KBMT
Today marks 4 years of KBMT, my music therapy business. I find it so fitting that I started this thing on Earth Day! What an honor to share with the earth the sound that heals and the kinship of strangers.
I am so proud of where I am. I wanted to make a reel highlighting some really special moments, but alas, I am inundated with work that needs to be done before creating that.
I am thankful that I took the leap into the unknown of entrepreneurship. I knew there was a way to make my “dream job” possible when the job postings weren’t there. I started with one small contract and a lot of odd jobs, to a now a full-time gig that combines many of my passions: end of life care, design and product development, creating jobs, and working with the next generation of music therapists.
When we moved back to Rochester from Minneapolis, I had three big goals:
•create more jobs
•increase the rate of pay
•help the community of music therapists
I am one small part in a bigger story, but I think I’ve helped support these three goals! I have created my job and helped other music therapists create theirs (including my first subcontractor who has built her business and will now be on her own!). I set a fair rate of pay and increased my prices over time and encouraged other music therapists to do the same ($100/hr for those wondering - contract rate not employee rate). And I’ve supported the community coming together through the @musictherapistpod, music therapist photos in the park, and the New York State Association for Music Therapy (membership coming soon!). NYSAMT will be a huge source of community for all of us!
I have trouble celebrating myself, so this is my way of celebrating - an expression of love in word form. Thank you all for being here and supporting me along the way. I could not have done it without you - seriously, I have considered leaving the profession of music therapy so many times! Every like, share, comment, referral, DM, post save, and kind word has kept me going. Thank you for being here with me!
All of my love,
